A Christmas Nightmare

There is a Christmas song about dreaming of a white Christmas. I HATE snow. Detest it. Refuse to drive in it. Don't like to. Don't have any intention of liking it EVER.

So what happens when 99% of the people you know wish for a white Christmas?

God laughs.

And sends in a blizzard.

"Well.... It's Aiden"

These are 3 words I do not like hearing. However, I hear them a lot; especially when it comes to his heart.

Here we are 2 days from Christmas and the phone just rang. And it's Dr. Pediatric Cardiology.

When Dr. Pediatric Cardiology herself calls, it is NEVER good news. I don't like talking to Dr. Pediatric Cardiology on the phone. I would much rather talk to Nurse Laura. The news is always better.

Remember in yesterday's post about how someone was going to have a heart attack when reading the pacer report? Yep, it happened. And that is why Dr. Pediatric Cardiology was calling.

It seems as if Aiden has had an episode of v-tach. Ventricular tachycardia. Yep, more tachycardia, only this time it's not atrial as previously encountered.

So, she wants another pacer check. And she set up an appointment with Dr. Pediatric Heart Electrician.

Pacer Check and An Escaped Toddler

Today was our first time to do an at-home pacemaker check. I was supposed to do it yesterday, but I kinda forgot. Oops!

I remembered this morning and then the pacemaker clinic called to say that they had not received the reading. Once I got off the phone with them, I took Aiden into his room and laid him down in bed. I gave him a bottle in hopes that he would be distracted long enough for me to perform this little test.

My hopes were dashed.

As soon as I placed the little mouse over Aiden's pacer, he grabbed it and did not want it anywhere near him. We tried several times and finally I grabbed his hands and made him be still. Every time Aiden moved the mouse, the machine would beep at me.

The actual reading takes less than 2 minutes. Which in toddler time is an eternity.

And then the reader (which is hooked up to a phone line in Aiden's room (yes, he has his own phone line due to the pacer reader), dials into the clinic. And it sounds like a fax machine sending the information over the line. It takes more time sending the information than gathering it does.

While it was sending the information, Aiden kept looking at it as if it were something evil. I can't exactly say as I blame him. Technology is great, but no when it's attached to your kid.

And I'm relatively sure that once they get the reading at the clinic, a few heart beats will skip....

Aiden and I went on an excursion to Walmart today. And Aiden was in his gait trainer, not the buggy.

First we had to stop at the door so that Aiden could ring the Salvation Army guy's bells. Yes, bells. The guy gave Aiden BOTH of the bells. Aiden didn't want to give them back either.

We ran, literally RAN, to the electronics department. I had to get some ink for the printer. I also needed to get some card stock. Aiden had other plans and went the opposite direction. Since we also needed milk, it wasn't that big of a deal. I need to send a letter to Walmart asking them WTH? they were thinking placing toys at toddler level in the middle of the main aisle way.

Apparently, seeing a small child in a gait trainer gets the kid A LOT of attention. Everyone in the store had to stop and talk to Aiden. Aiden gets distracted easily when he is showing off his wheels and ran into more than a few displays. Fortunately, nothing was broken or damaged beyond point of sale.

Then we had to do a turn around back to stationary, which is located in front of the electronics department. Of course, there were more people there for Aiden to show off his skills.

Have you ever tried directing traffic while holding an ink cartridge, gallon of milk, package of printer paper and a toy? Not easy...

Oh, did I forget to mention that the little hand held carriers are no where to be discovered?

The child you are trying to direct escapes down another aisle while you are trying to pick up the merchandise that was in your hand/arms, which is now laying on the floor. And since that child knows he has freedom from the leash - because it is dragging on the floor behind him - is now running again down the next few aisles. Oh, and he's laughing at you!

We finally made it to the check out, where one of Aiden's Walmart girlfriends is located. Aiden didn't want to stay long enough to chat, he was ready to go. However, we had to go to the other side of the store to see his other girlfriend, where yes, he decided to stay and chat only because she lets him play with the lanyard her name tag is attached to.

I inform Aiden it is time to leave, to which he starts waving goodbye and blowing kisses to everyone.

Santa's Portable North Pole

I found out about this on Facebook. I did one for Aiden, but there is no way to embed the video here. Just click here, fill out some general information about your child and watch the video from Santa's Portable North Pole.

5 Little Piggies

Aiden has discovered gloves. And he loves wearing gloves. It doesn't matter if they are his gloves or my gloves. He just wants to wear them.

Every morning when I get Aiden ready for school, I take his gloves out of his back pack and tell him it is time to leave and that he needs to put his gloves on. He'll come "running" from where ever he is, to put his gloves on. Now, the funny thing is that these aren't mittens. No, he wears gloves with fingers. And he knows each of his little fingers has it's very own glove finger. And he will separate his fingers to fit inside the glove (though the glove is a little too big still for his small hands).

Letter to Aiden, December 2009

Dearest Aiden,

When you wake up, the dog wakes up. When Mommy puts you in the big bed with her and the dog is located there also, please keep in mind that Mommy would love to go back to sleep. 3:30am is not an appropriate time to decide to make friends with the dog.

Speaking of the dog, when the dog gets into trouble, your commentary and laughter is not necessary. The dog does not laugh when you get into trouble.

The Christmas presents under the tree are not necessarily yours. There is no need to unwrap them. The reason they are there is so that you do not attack the tree and the decorations. Consider them the Great Wall of Aiden. Do not breach the barrier.

As you have noticed, your toys have been deported back to your bedroom. Once again, it is not necessary to smuggle them back into the living room.

When eating, your plate contains the exact same food items as the rest of the family. It is not necessary to dump yours on the floor and then crawl up into someone's lap expecting to eat their food.

When we are traveling in the truck and your cup is placed in your possession, please do not feel the need to chunk it anywhere. I don't think they are meant to be thrown. You are in a closed area, there are no friends around, it is not a distance contest.

The dog's water bowl is not to be confused as a sink. Please do not wash your hands in it.

Dog food is meant to be consumed by the dog, not little boys.

When the television station gets changed during a commercial, you do not need to yell "Hey!" Just sayin...

When assisting Mommy with putting away the dishes, please refrain from mixing dog food with the utensils.

Please do not open the CD/DVD player on your own. Someone will assist you in that.

The cords on Mommy's computer tower are there for a reason. Please do not think you need to pull out the mouse cord when Mommy is in the middle of something.

As you have noticed, there are battery chargers located throughout the house. Please refrain from unplugging them and taking out the batteries. Mommy uses those batteries for electronic devices.

As always, these rules are put into effect for multiple reasons. Please think of these rules the next time you decide to break one.

Lovingly,

Mommy

Pajamas and Polar Express

Today is PJ day at school. Chris wanted Aiden to wear his race car jammies, but I couldn't get the Sure Steps and his shoes over the footsies. So, Aiden wore his Cars jammies and light up robe. There were only 3 kids in the class who wore jammies, but the teachers wore theirs.

The children will watch Polar Express today and have hot chocolate. Aiden likes hot chocolate ( at least he tried to drink a large cup of it that I was attempting to drink myself the other day LOL! )

We Do Have a Christmas Tree

Sunday, Chris went shopping and decided that we really do need a tree, despite earlier conversations of not doing a tree. Instead of the huge 7 footer that rotates (and challenges a child to battle), he bought a 3 foot tree and it is pre-lit with red lights. I spent a whole 30 minutes assembling the tree and putting silver bells on it.

The silver bells have not been at Aiden's mercy. He is fascinated with them. The tree has fallen victim to Aiden twice. I really didn't want to put any presents out yet; I wanted to save them for Christmas Eve. However, do to Aiden's persistence with removing the silver bells, the presents had to come out to protect the tree. Since we have more presents than tree, the tree had to sit on something. That something is a comforter set that we bought during the Black Friday madness. Don't worry, the comforter set is for us - no one is going to get tipped off on their gifts.

Starting Monday....

Aiden will become a full time student in our local public school. We'll be amending his IEP for education Monday - Friday for 2.5 hours a day and including PT, OT and ST while he is there.

He has been doing much better in the public school class. We haven't had any issues when I drop him off in the mornings. There has been no crying and Aiden willingly walks into class and straight to the table and holds his arms up for one of the assistants to free him from his gait trainer.

I take Aiden early enough so that he can eat breakfast with his new friends, who are happy to see Aiden in the class and not having a meltdown. They all greet him with hugs and smiles.
