'Rosa's Law' Legislation Receives First Hearing

Youngster with Down syndrome prompts new bill and new terminology

By MITCHELLE STEPHENSON For the Capital
Published January 29, 2009

The first step in getting a bill turned into law in the Maryland General Assembly is to have it heard in committee.

On Tuesday, with a gentle snow falling outside the House Health and Government Operations Committee meeting room, HB-20, also known as "Rosa's Law," got its first hearing. The law would mandate that the current terminology, "mentally retarded," be changed to "intellectually disabled" on state health and education paperwork.

Rosa Marcellino, 7, of Edgewater is the Rosa of Rosa's Law. She was born with Down syndrome. When her mother Nina Marcellino went to Central Elementary School to enroll Rosa in kindergarten in 2007, she was shocked to learn that the state attached the label mentally retarded to the paperwork for the incoming student. "I considered this term an insult," Mrs. Marcellino said.

In fact, many in the disability community consider the term "retarded" to be an outmoded label for people with a variety of intellectual disabilities - not just those affected with Down Syndrome.

Christine Marchand, executive director of the Maryland Arc, explained that the change in terminology has been ongoing in the disability community over the course of several decades.

"In the 1980s, families and people with developmental disabilities marched forward at The Arc's national convention to have the name changed," Ms. Marchand said. The Arc was previously known as the Association for Retarded Citizens. "Even the A-R-C as an acronym was dismissed because of the 'R'," she added.

Mrs. Marcellino's encounter with the school system not only upset her but also motivated her to take action. She started making phone calls to anyone who would listen. She called the PTA; The Arc of Anne Arundel County; Maryland Arc.

Eventually, she contacted Del. Ted Sophocleus, D-Linthicum, who drafted a bill to have that designation changed in state health and education paperwork. That bill, HB-20, was pre-filed in November 2008, and got its first committee hearing in the new session of the General Assembly on Tuesday.

Mrs. Marcellino helped to identify witnesses to testify. One of the first on the panel was Nick Marcellino, Rosa's 13-year-old brother. He came representing not only himself, but also his sisters Gigi and Maddie.

He gave moving testimony from a sibling's perspective. "On any given day at school, at the mall, on a sports field or in the movies, me and my sisters hear, 'that's so retarded,' or 'you're such a retard,' " Nick said. Throughout his testimony, he talked about how it felt to have kids say those words. "We're not allowed to use that word, so when my mom told me that my sister's school was using the words 'Mentally Retarded' to describe Rosa, I couldn't understand that," he said.

He wrapped up by saying, "some say we shouldn't worry about the words, just the way we treat people, but when you think about it, what you call people is how you treat them."

Nick's testimony was followed by some VIPs in the disability and education communities, among them: the executive director of Maryland Arc, a representative from school principals, a representative from the school psychologists' association. In all over 20 people spoke to the importance of changing this law, and even more delivered written testimony supporting the change.

But not one person testified that the label should remain.

"The bill will pass, there is no opposition. The bill will pass and become law," said Del. Bob Costa, R-Deale, who represents Mrs. Marcellino's district, adding that he wanted to make a motion during the hearing to pass it in committee, but that the staff attorney wanted to make sure that there wouldn't be any conflicts with federal law.

"It's a great bill and Rosa's brother was a deciding factor. He presented himself well and his leadership convinced everybody that this was a great bill," Mr. Costa said yesterday.

The next step for the bill will be to move from committee to the floor of the House, then for the Senate to adopt similar legislation. Hopefully at the end of the 90-day session, a conference bill will be approved, reconciling any differences between the two chambers. Then it will be up to the governor to sign it into law. As the bill is written, it would take effect Oct. 1 of this year.

A New Mode of Transportation

Aiden has a sit to push to walk toy that he has had for a year now. Problem is he refused to get anywhere near it.

Until today.

This is what Aiden decided to do during Speech therapy:

I'm NOT Worthy!!!

Don't you just love it? The new background?!

I've been needing to give A is for Aiden a new look. Yesterday, I emailed Rebecca (who soooo knows how to do backgrounds and did the first background with the cute little puppy and "A"s) from Rebecca Creates.

Honestly, isn't Rebecca the greatest?!!! All I did was give her a theme (cars - since Aiden loves cars) and her creative juices flowed. And the background is way cuter than the other place to get bloggy backgrounds!

Still Iced In

Apparently, our town decided not to sand/salt the streets. Ice is everywhere. Yesterday, on Facebook, we were comparing streets. One of the teachers at Aiden's school has clear streets. This is what the street in front of the house looks like

The tire tracks are from Tuesday. I joke you not. Even though it looks like snow, that is solid ice. 3 full inches of ice. I ventured out long enough to check the mail and I left no evidence. There are no footprints.

Today, Karrie, Aiden's EI PT, came out to the house to work with Aiden. He looked at her like she was crazy for coming out. And he refused to cooperate with her. He tried to pout his way out of therapy, but his faces he makes are just too cute for affectiveness. I also don't think he was too happy with having to miss Handy Manny and Imagination Movers.

The nap boycott is continuing. I thought he was going to take a nap yesterday. He was laying on the floor, almost asleep when Chris walked in. Aiden was up for the rest of the day. He then noticed a CD spindle next to the desk - CDs were everywhere! At least he is able to entertain himself while we're iced in.

Ice, Snow, and a Police Escort

Well, the icing of everything outside has stopped. It just won't go away, and it probably won't go away for a few days. It's only going to get up to 33* today so what very little melts will refreeze tonight. My trees are covered in ice. And it decided to snow.

Aiden's speech therapy was canceled yesterday and rescheduled for tomorrow. Karrie, Aiden's EI PT, texted me this morning and asked what the roads were like. PT was also rescheduled for tomorrow. Yeah, Aiden is going to love tomorrow.

My new stove was delivered yesterday after all. Isn't she pretty?

Which is the reason for the police escort. As the delivery guys were leaving, they hit our neighbour's cable line and took it out. They came back to the house with two city police following them. Chris was at another neighbour's house down the street working on their cable, so he couldn't help them. When he got back to the house, I told him what happened and he called work dispatch to report it. He probably got that job today unless someone else came out last night.

Anyone Need Some Ice?

It's been raining. Since the temperatures are below humane conditions freezing, the rain has turned into ice. Last night it wasn't soo bad where we live, but the further north, it was pretty bad. It took Steph, Alyx's (from Aiden's class) mom, 2 hours to drive home.

And I had to get out in it for a short time last evening. Chris decided that he wanted burritos for dinner. Guess what? I didn't have all the makings for burritos, so a trip to the grocery store was called for. And when I took out the trash last night, the grass was frozen, but the roads were still just wet. I could have gone next door to the illegal immigrants neighbour's house, but I've already been bit by their ankle biter chihuahua.

This morning? That is a completely different story. I woke up to the sound of sleet hitting the windows. I haven't ventured outside and don't plan to. Me and ice do not get along. Ice is the reason I suffer migraines. But from gauging the ice on the trees in the front yard, we have at least 1/4 inch of ice and it's still coming down. Meaning = there is black ice under all the sleet ice. This does not make for good driving conditions.

My new stove may not be delivered today.

Aiden does not care. He has discovered the case of Pepsi and is trying to figure out how to free a can for his personal consumption. Every 30 seconds, he laughs as he sticks his hand in the box.

On to potty talk....

Aiden is not known for pooping every day. He's a once a week type of kid, even on Miralax. However for the past 2 days, he has had multiple poops. Sunday he went 3 times and twice yesteray. But he is waiting to poop until we make it to the bathroom and he sits on the potty. I'm wondering if he has finally figured out bowel control?

Yay for potty training!

It's COLD!!

It's a good thing Aiden and I went to get Pediasure on Saturday while it was still somewhat nice. We had to drive extra because NO store here in town has Pediasure. Seriously, NONE! Both stores were out. We had to go to another town to buy it and Aiden picked out a new hat for himself. One he actually likes wearing.

Aiden got to come home early from school today. We are undergoing another ice storm. Two days of freezing rain, up to 1/2 inch of ice. (Hopefully this time we don't lose power for a week, like last year.) Between school and home is nothing but bridges and I counted 5 cars on the side of the road. Not 3 miles from the school, I HAD to turn on the Jeep's defrost to remain driving home; the road and my windshield completely froze over. I swear I heard the Jeep belch from drinking all the gas that fast.

Aiden probably doesn't have school tomorrow, or therapy for that matter. Aiden's PT from today was calling it a day after Aiden. However, my new range had best be delivered tomorrow. ETA: SCHOOL IS CLOSED, JUST RELEASED THE CLOSINGS

Oh, and next week, we are doing a Bloggy Give-A-Way in honour of Aiden's Happy Heart Day 2nd Anniversary. We're giving away 2 gifts, so stay tuned.

Spot Free

Aiden's thrush spots in his mouth have cleared up. (I like the purple stuff!) And he seems happier. Granted, he didn't sleep through the night last night, but it was a calmer sleep than he's been having. He didn't toss and turn throughout the night and kept his head on the pillow.

The nap boycott is continuing. He passed out from pure exhaustion last night at 6pm - on my bedroom floor. And promptly woke up at 7pm when Chris got home. He then was more than happy to eat pizza and wings, but only wanted a few bites of sweet potatoes.

Chris is so not on board with the g-tube. He is down right refusing it and doesn't think Aiden needs one. However if Aiden continues to eat like he is, we may get to skip it.

Hopefully, the rest of this month is event free. But I'm not going to hold my breath, he's got a nasal wheeze today.

Feeling Better

Aiden went to bed a little before 9pm last night and slept through the night. I say slept through the night only because he didn't wake up any time between 1:15 and 4am. He stayed in his own bed until 5 am when he wanted a bottle.

I got up, got him a bottle. He drank it in no time and wanted another. Then at 6am, he wanted a bottle, then another. Then at 8am, he was ready for another, so I fixed his milkshake. And he drank that.

At least he is feeling good enough to want to drink and eat. Last night he ate Gerber Graduates Mashed Potatoes with Cheese and Broccoli. A lot of it. He emptied one bowl and then asked for "more eat". Of course he was sitting on my lap, but hey as long as he's eating and wanting more, I'll do whatever it takes.

Hopefully, we're on an upward slope to him feeling better for a while. Oklahoma is having it's first ever state-wide Down syndrome conference, Reaching Across the Plains in March and I would sooo like to attend. Also in March is the Governor's Conference on Developmental Disabilities, but that one is in Tulsa so I should be able to make that one. The Down syndrome conference is in OKC and Chris wants to spend the night down there.. Anyone want to watch a certain little boy?

Tulsa Shooting Victim Dies

NewsOn6.com

TULSA, OK -- Police say a 6-year old Tulsa boy who was shot in the face Wednesday afternoon has died.

Police say Jeffery Allen died Thursday morning at a Tulsa hospital.

Related story: 1/21/2009 Tulsa Child Shot In Face Still In Critical Condition

Police were called after the family showed up at Tulsa hospital with the boy.

An officer say Jeffrey Allen had Down's Syndrome and was in a bedroom of his home in the 800 block of North Troost, when reportedly shot himself in the face.

An investigation into the shooting continues.

The Purple People Eater

Aiden went to see Dr. Pediatrician this morning for the spots in his mouth. And it is thrush. She gave us two options for treatment - Nystatin or "Painting him purple."

Nystatin is 2mL 4 times a day with a syringe. That isn't going to happen. Aiden HATES syringes.

So, I asked how quickly the other stuff worked. Dr. Pediatrician said it works pretty quick and just as effective. Aiden got painted purple, literally. The nurse came in with 2 swabs, I held him down and she painted the inside of his mouth with Gentian Violet.

.
And it stains. Aiden's mouth is stained violet. I kept thinking to myself the line from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Violet ate that blueberry bubble gum and started to turn violet "Violet, you've gone violet!" The staining has spread a little from drooling, but he's not totally violet yet.

In other Aiden health news....

Being sick this entire month, a certain little boy has lost weight. If he can't keep it down, he's not going to keep it on his lack of a butt. So, he has lost 9 oz since his last visit 2 weeks ago. Hmmm, not good. REALLY NOT GOOD!!! Dr. Pediatrician wants to see him back in 2 weeks for a weight check. If he hasn't gained it back, she is pushing for the g-tube and fundo placement surgery. ***Banging head on keyboard here***

Since Dr. General Surgeon who likes to play with hearts and thinks I am an "ungrateful, unreasonable b#itch" is the only one here willing to do the surgery and everyone else will default to him, I asked if we could go to OU Children's. She agreed. It didn't take long to convince her of my choice of surgeons. I mentioned his name, she shook her head and consented. (I love doctors who agree with me.)

It isn't like I didn't expect this to happen. After all, Dr. Pediatric Cardiologist has threatened this for 2+ years. We've just been able to put it off since Aiden has been gaining weight. Granted he still doesn't even register on the Down syndrome growth chart, but he was gaining weight. Enough to avoid a surgery.

He's Sick Again

This is 3 weeks in a row that Aiden has had something. Not the way I wanted to kick off the new year.

Aiden has been a bear the last few days. Chris noticed that Aiden's tongue was white, and we thought maybe it was Pediasure. I got to looking in his mouth and his entire mouth is covered in this white pasty stuff.

I called the doctor yesterday, and the nurse thought it sounded a lot like thrush. We made an appointment, but the fastest I could get him in is Thursday morning.

Since Aiden is boycotting his noon nap, he fell asleep on the floor about 4:30 yesterday. He woke up in a foul mood about 6:30. He then played for a while before he got really irritable and we snuggled. He was sleeping, but not sound asleep when I put him in his bed. And he promptly woke up, demanding to be let out. I got him to calm down and almost back to sleep again, so I put him in our bed. Chris had the inauguration coverage on in the bedroom.

I heard Aiden laughing. I went in to check on him and he is sitting up clapping as President Obama and First Lady Michelle are dancing. I knew he wasn't going back to sleep.

So, I got him out of bed and went into the living room. We were watching The Bachelor as we don't ever watch anything on at the regularly scheduled time. We have the DVR. Well, the segment came where the girls were getting their "girls" plastered. Aiden sat up as straight as he could and got the biggest smile ever! He's 2, how does he know about boobies?!

Yeah, It Was Definately A Monday

Again, there was no nap. What is up with the "No Napping" policy Aiden has imposed? His PT called at 12:30 (told ya) and was here within 5 minutes of hanging up the phone. Aiden did not want to play with her. He threw a screaming fit, laid on the floor and drank his bottle - pretending to be sleepy. As soon as she left, he was right back up playing.

Our oven is dead. I mean dead! It won't even turn on. So Chris called the repair guy and found out it would be just as expensive buying a new one. So, we're getting a new range. I went online and found the one I wanted. A nice little Maytag with convection oven options. Chris went to Home Depot with the printed off page. (It's on sale until Wednesday) And he was gone nearly 4 hours. The Home Depot employee managed to freeze the bank card, the range wasn't ordered. Chris gets to go to the bank today, get the cash out, go to Home Depot, order the range, and hopefully they will deliver it on Friday. I should have just sent him to Circuit City as all their stuff is on permanent sale, but their website is no longer accessible.

In those 4 hours, Aiden managed to get irritable and fell asleep before 7. See what happens when little boys refuse to take naps? I spent those 4 hours playing on Facebook and cooking a steak.

At 9, I woke Aiden up enough to take his meds and I went to bed. Aiden had school today. Had being the operative word, because he is now playing on the living room floor with his Fisher Price MP3 player. Chris decided that Aiden could go to bed with us at 10pm. Everything went fine until 2:30 this morning when Chris decided to move Aiden, pissing him off royally, and the screaming insued. For 2 hours, Aiden screamed. Aiden screamed so much, that he caused himself to throw up. The screaming ended at 5:30 this morning.

And yes, I made Chris get up with Aiden during this fiasco. He caused it.

Guitar Hero

It is Definately a Monday

Aiden did not take a nap at ALL yesterday, even though I put him in his bed and told him he needed to take a nap. He was getting bitchy grumpy around 11:30am. Instead of taking a nap, he played.

So around 6:30 last night, he started getting whiny and irritable. I fixed him a milkshake and he drank most of it on the floor. At 7:15, we cuddled on the sofa and he finished his bottle before falling asleep at 7:30. I retrieved him from his bed at 1:15 per his demands and he fell back asleep.

At 4:15 this morning, he wanted another bottle, however he started a coughing fit resulting in vomit on me and the floor. I got him, me and the floor cleaned up. But by this time, he was awake wanting to play. He promptly went back to his bed where he was allowed to play and I went back to bed where I was allowed to sleep.

I don't know what time it was when Chris woke me up saying "The baby wants to get up." I informed Chris that I wasn't ready to get up (it was still dark outside), so he got up with Aiden.

School is out today for the holiday, so that is good. At least Aiden won't be in a foul mood at school. However, his Monday therapist will call in hopes of coming over early.

Which I soooo don't get. We tell her weekly that Aiden does not get home until 2pm, yet she repeatedly calls every Monday wanting to know if she can come to the house between 11 and 1. I don't see the point in coming over early if the patient is not even going to be home. I don't want her to get in the habit of coming to the house when Aiden isn't even supposed to be here. On the days Aiden doesn't have school, I try to schedule appointments in the hours he should have school. It is good to keep him on a routine.

The Angel Sleep

Aiden has some unusual sleeping positions - folded over in half with his feet at his ears, sitting up, legs and feet on the wall.....

Postitions that generally make us laugh when we check on him though the night.

However, last night was different.

He was actually under his cover with his head on the pillow. He had his hands tucked under his cheek. He hasn't slept under covers since his heart surgery when they had a couple of heavy blankets on him to keep his hands down.

My Bad

If you have not been able to read all about Aiden this week, I sincerely apologize. It was totally my fault. Well, kinda.

I added a new widget to the sidebar for playing music. And I tested it on both Firefox and IE. Then I started receiving emails.

I called my mom and asked her if she was having problems viewing the blog and she told me that she was unable to view it using IE, but she was still able to view it using Firefox. I asked if she had the current version of IE, 8. She said she was using the most current version of IE - the one that came on her computer. Apparently, not everyone was sent the notification in the last batch of Microsoft updates.

But that is where the problem lies. Several weeks ago, I downloaded the latest version of IE - 8. So I was able to see the page without any problems. Apparently, the music player for blogger doesn't like the older versions of IE. Using IE-8, I did manage to find a correction for the error. However, that correction isn't available for IE-7 or older.

However, since not everyone knows of the newest version of IE, I decided to remove the music player and offer my deepest apologies... Please don't beat me too hard LOL

The Word

Transition.

I hate this word. I do; I really really do. I hate this word so much I do not allow it to be said in the house. It is banned. When it is mentioned, I cover my ears and sing. Did I mention I hate this word?

I am soooo not ready for Aiden to ++banned word inserted here++ out of SoonerStart (the 0 - 3 program for children with developmental delays). I love his EI team and I don't want to lose them. I have asked if we could go off of Aiden's developmental age and not his actual age. They wont let me. When the time comes for Aiden to ++insert banned word here++ out of SoonerStart, he will become a statistic. The IEP will happen. The testing begins.

We have two options to chose from:
  1. going into the public school system
  2. keeping Aiden at his current school, The Little Light House
EI Service Coordinator is going to call Special Needs Educational Director and set up an appointment for us to tour the school and take a look-see of the class and meet the teacher.

There are pros and cons to both.

If I keep Aiden in his current school, he will get great therapies 4 days a week. He already knows the teachers and it is structured. It is private and quiet. But I feel that sometimes he is being hindered.
  • The school ST wants to put Aiden back on Stage 2 baby food. This (to me) is a step back. At home he eats Gerber Graduates and table foods.
  • The school PT is unyielding in getting Aiden to reciprocal crawl. The child shows no interest in crawling this way.
  • I mentioned taking Aiden's gait trainer to school with Aiden in hopes that they can help motivate Aiden to start walking in it. School PT said that it would be detrimental to Aiden's development. "He must learn to crawl before he can walk". The child doesn't even army crawl at home anymore; he has figured out the "butt scoot" and is perfectly happy with traveling in this method.
  • In Aiden's current class, there are 8 special needs children - 4 with Down syndrome, 4 with various other delays/disabilites. Then there are 2 "non-special needs" kids, but they are babies. Of these children, 2 are walking (one Ds, one non), one is learning to walk (Ds). Aiden is cruising (when he wants to), one (Ds) isn't ready to start thinking of walking yet, 3 (non Ds) - well, I'm not sure if they will ever walk.
  • Aiden will be surrounded by developmentally delayed children until he is 6. WHERE IS THE MOTIVATION?
Here are my worries about the public school system:
  • We live in a very small community. The 3 - 6 program is not in all schools, just one.
  • Aiden will have to be tested to see which services he qualifies for. They will want to do an IQ test.
  • I will have to fight for Aiden to be included.
  • There will be numerous IEP meetings to determine what the school deems best for Aiden and what Aiden needs/deserves in his education. IE - do I really think the school should be teaching Aiden how to do laundry or cook meals? As his parent, shouldn't that be my job?
  • The school district demands Aiden be walking by the time he is 3 and be mostly potty trained. Uhhh, most children with Down syndrome don't even begin to think about walking until they are 3 (which is why I am trying sooo hard to get Aiden's light bulb to come on that he can/will walk). He's also been working on potty training since he was 17 months old. Jeesh!
  • Again, Aiden will be surrounded by developmentally delayed/disabled children until the age of 6. There is no law stating that parents of "typical" kids make their kids go to school this early

I just don't know what to do. Aiden's EI Service Coordinator will be out next month to discuss the options and begin the final steps of ++insert banned word here++. I want to do what is best for Aiden, but how does one know? This is the stuff anxiety is made of.

Sick Day #5 and a Hearing Screening

Aiden woke up shortly before 7:30 this morning. I fixed his morning milkshake and he drank it while still in bed. He then was ready to get up for the day. As we were walking out of the bedroom, he started coughing and we went to the bathroom.

Aiden passed gas, so I knew he was getting ready to poo. And there is a correlation between going poo and coughing. If he strains too hard going poo, he will choke and then vomit. Anyone else had this happen? So, while Aiden was standing up at the toilet releasing some of his stomach contents, he pooed in his diaper. Once he was finished, he was good to go.

Aiden played in the living room with his toys until time to get dressed to leave for his hearing test. The temperature outside today was 18*, so I went outside, loaded my stuff in the Jeep, and got it started - barely. Since we haven't been anywhere all week and with the below humane temperatures, it had to crank some.

Aiden was bundled in his recliner and we drove the 40 minutes to the EI office. While waiting on the audiologist, Aiden's service coordinator came out and asked how Aiden was doing. We are going to bump up his EI Speech to twice monthly for these last remaining months. And then the word was mentioned. This will have to be a-whole-nother post, because I have a ton of feelings and emotions thoughts and questions about that....

EI Audiologist comes up to retrieve Aiden and myself. We go down to her office with the sound proof booth and we talked about Aiden having the tummy bug, so he may not want to cooperate too much. She put the tympogram doo-hickey in his left ear (non - registering ear) and it registered. The tube is still open. She put the doo-hickey in his right ear and it registered. That tube is still open, though he does have some waxy build up.

She then left the booth, shut the door and started in on the sounds. Aiden was turning his head, laughing and clapping with all but one really low (the lowest, in fact) pitch. He even acknowledged the "big boy sounds" and Audiologist laughed with delight. She is happy with the results, so no trip to OKC for Aiden. This is good news, yes?

She does want Aiden to come back in before his 3rd birthday for another test, so we'll go back in August before school starts.

Sick Day #4

All through the night, Aiden did great. There was no vomiting.

Around 6:30 this moring, Aiden wanted a bottle. So I got up and got him some Pedialyte. He didn't want it. So I got him 2 oz of Pediasure. Which went down in no time, but promptly came right back up. So, I gave him the Pedialyte bottle again. He still didn't want it.

I got up with Chris at 7am and then went to lay down again with Aiden. Poor little boy was hungry. While laying there, the thought came to my head - "Can I dilute Pediasure? Surely I can? That way it won't be so rich and he'll possibly keep it down." I swear the bells went off in my head.

So I got up and mixed 2 oz of Pediasure with 2 oz of water. He drank it. And it stayed down. Then he wanted more. So, I mixed him another bottle this time with his meds. And the second bottle of diluted Pediasure stayed down. He did spit up a little when we belched. But hey, I'll take that over all of it coming back up.

He is currently watching the Disney channel and has managed to play with his GloWorm and Busy Ball Popper this morning - 3 things he hasn't even wanted to do AT ALL this week. My arms are sore and my back hurts from continually holding and snuggling him - there is a trip to the chiropractor in my near future.

Oh, and as I was fixing my morning glass of caffeine, I looked out the window and there are little white things floating down from the sky. Surely, that isn't snow? But sure enough:

When I got up with Chris, he turned it on the Weather Channel. They said that the temperature outside was 16* with a 25% chance of precipitation. However, for some strange reason, I was thinking actual rain. I did not comprehend that any precipitation when the temperatures are under 32* = something cold, freezing, and possibly white. My brain does not function that early on very little sleep.

I guess that means Aiden is lucky. I will have to put off my trip to Wal-Mart to get printer ink and mailing envelopes. I am not dragging him out in this weather just as he is getting over his stomach virus. The business will have to wait.

Still Sick - Day 3

Aiden is still sick with the stomach bug. However he is managing to keep down 2 - 3 oz of Pediasure now. Anymore than that winds up in the toilet, on the floor, or me. He has managed to skip all of his therapies this week due to the bug.

And now Chris is sick with it also. He came down with it late Monday night.

So, what do my two men spend their day doing?

What Sick Looks Like

There is a stomach bug going around, I had it, now Aiden has it. Fortunately, I was able to keep some liquids down. Aiden, on the other hand is not. Everything he drinks, comes back up. He is so desperate for anything to drink. And I mean anything

That is a cold wet washcloth. He's had to resort to sucking the water out of it, just for something. He'll even suck the Tylenol and Motrin out of the syringes.

Aiden is Sick (Again)

He caught it from me, not the other way around. Last night at 11 pm, Aiden threw up in bed. Then the diarrhea began.

I think my nose is bruised from sleeping with my glasses on last night. It is easier to keep them on when Aiden is sick - we have to make too many trips to the bathroom. And seriously, I can't see my hand in front of my face more than 8 inches without some sort of corrective lens.

However, unlike me, he has an appetite. He just can't keep it down. So I will be having to make the trek to Wal-Mart for Pedialyte. We used the last individual bottle last night. I don't buy the big bottles. For us, those are a waste. He won't drink enough of it. Then 75% of the bottle goes down the sink since it is only good for 48 hours.

Chris slept on the sofa since Aiden and I were sharing a sick bed. He doesn't want to catch whatever it is. I reminded him that he may not want to drink out of the same glass I am then.

I Can't Be Sick

Have you ever had one of those illnesses that make you feel like you are dying a slow painful death? That is how I feel this weekend and it started Saturday morning.

It hurts to move, yet I have to in order to make it to the bathroom every 15 minutes. Something is coming out. (Yes, I know TMI.) I called Chris to ask if he was working in our hometown. I NEEDED the upset stomach, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea medicine, but there was no way I could go without being that close to the bathroom. However, he wasn't. And there was no chance at him getting to come this close to home. Not to mention, he worked late last night.

When Aiden took his nap, I decided that I would take one also. However, my nap was interrupted by a stabbing pain in my chest - heartburn. I didn't know what heartburn was until I was pregnant with Aiden. I thought I was dying then also.

I attempted to eat some soup last night, but Chris decided that he wanted to eat barbecue buffalo wings at the same time. EWWWW!!! My stomach has been holding Olympic gymnastic tryouts ever since.

I don't know what time Aiden woke up last night. I made Chris get out of bed to fetch him. I know that sounds mean, but I didn't have the strength to pick him up. I don't think Chris was too happy about it either.

I did manage to get some laundry done today, between the bouts of nausea. It wouldn't have happened if I hadn't. I did manage to talk Chris out of his recliner to empty the trash and to go to the store long enough to get me medicine and gas in the Jeep (Aiden has to get to school somehow this week). Why is it when the mom's are sick, the world must go on, but anyone else in the house gets sick and the whole universe must stop?

I also managed to somewhat take a nap on the sofa today. I say somewhat only because Aiden finds pulling my hair an appropriate way to wake me up. My head has become a target for Aiden. If it's not my hair being removed from my head in his death grasp, my glasses are being removed from my face. Yes, 2 year olds are like that.

Hopefully, I'm catching it from Aiden and not the other way around.

In other Aiden news, Aiden has decided that brushing his teeth is not the end of the world. He has managed to let me brush his teeth every day this week without clamping his mouth shut and me having to use the jaws of death to open it. However, we must clap and say "YAY!" at least 6 times during the ordeal.

Also, he has learned to suck from a straw. This is good according to school. However EI Speech Therapist would prefer Aiden to continue to drink from an open faced cup.

Oh, and how does a certain little boy who lives in a technological advanced house choose to spend his Friday nights?

Yes, that is a cell phone and he is attempting to text someone. I don't know who, but the little boy is fascinated with phones. On a daily basis, I must free either my cell phone or the house phone from his hands to avoid unwanted calls to either 911 or some foreign country. So, if you get a call from me one of these days and I'm not on the phone, you'll know why.

God Bless the Children
