My Biggest Thanks

I have mentioned my ob/gyn several times in this blog. With Aiden's heart issues, Teressa and I decided that it would be best if Aiden were born at the high risk hospital in OKC. Unfortunately, that would mean that Teressa would not get to deliver Aiden.
When the time came for my 6 week post natal appointment, I took Aiden as it would be the first time Teressa would get to meet him. We went through the routine things following a birth then she reached into Aiden's car bed and picked him up.
Aiden and Teressa see each other monthly at our Ds support group meetings. As soon as Teressa sits down, she immediately takes Aiden from my arms and cuddles him.

One year ago on this date, I got a call from Teressa asking me to come in to the office. She wanted to do an amniocentesis based on the results of my level 2 ultrasound. She didn't tell me at the time that she suspected Down syndrome. As I lay on the table, she asked if the baby had a name yet. I told her Aiden Wyatt. We talked about Aiden moving around and "dancing" to Hank Williams Jr. while I was pregnant. When the proceedure was over, she said that the results should be back in a week. In 8 days, on July 29th, it will be the one year anniversary that Aiden will have Down syndrome. WOW!! How my life has changed in this short time.

Aiden's School

When I got the diagnoses of Down syndrome, my ob/gyn gave me a pamphlet on a school in our area for children with special needs. It is called the Little Light House. The school was opened in the early 70's by two families who have daugthers with visual impairments. It is a school that helps children and families work harder to reach the developmental stages needed for everyone in society.
Teressa said that I should get Aiden on the waiting list as it could be a long wait. So, while I was still pregnant with Aiden I had called the school to get the process started. I had to fill out an application and go in for a "mini" interview and a tour of the school. The aide showing me around said that it could take up to 18 months to get Aiden into the school. So I waited around for the call to come.
The call finally came on July 9th. There is a good possibility that there would be a placement spot for the fall semester. If I was still interested in getting Aiden enrolled, would I be willing to take him to the school for a screening. I immediately said yes and set the appointment for the screening. I had to do some schedule re-arranging as Aiden had a pediatrician appointment the same day and time. (I seem to be good at double booking appointments, we have so many!!!)
On Monday July 16th, I took Aiden to the Little Light House for his screening. I think most of the therapists and teachers came out to meet the possible new student. They all fell in love with his charming smile and little feet. We then went into one of the therapy rooms where a teacher, a speech therapist, a physical therapist, and an occupational therapist were waiting to meet Aiden. One was videotaping him and documenting where he is develpmentally. After 30 minutes or so, we were told that we will be getting a call letting us know if Aiden would be placed for the fall semester.
The very next day, I was giving Aiden a bottle when the phone rang. It was the teacher who had interviewed me during Aiden's screening. Aiden has been accepted for the fall sememster placement. He will be going into the "orange" class which is for the youngest of the children!!!!

Battling Colds

Both of the men in my life have colds. Aiden got his cold a week and a half ago. When we went for a regular visit with his cardiologist, I asked about a decongestant for poor Aiden. He sounds like a bulldog with all the congestion in his little head. Unfortunately, with Aiden's heart condition, NOTHING can be given to help with his cold or congestion, we'll just have to let the cold run it's course and hopefully nothing more dangerous develops.

Oh MOM!!!

Aiden has lots of clothes. By lots, I mean TONS!! I am a shopper by nature and therefore I have went a little nuts buying clothes for Aiden. Here is one of the outfits that Aiden has.

A few friends and I have started a community blog for sharing stories. If you, your s.o, family (kids included), or are a caregiver of someone who has a "litte something extra" would like to share your story on what Down syndrome means to you, please visit the site. Feel free to email or leave a comment for the id and passcode.

Reaching Milestones

Aiden has given me a few jolts in the last few weeks. He has learned to sit with support, sings to the radio, and says "da-da da-da". I wish he would have learned to say "mama" first, but I'll take what I can get.
He is trying to learn to crawl, but he hasn't mastered upper body strength yet. That will come in time...... It is no longer any use to keep a blanket on the floor as he will immediately roll or scoot off of it. I guess he likes the carpet texture. Which that is good, as he wont have his blankets on the floor following him when he does start to crawl. Oh, and last night he held his own bottle to eat!!
I bought a Fisher Price play gym for him a few months ago. Until recently, he wanted nothing to do with it. Lately though, he lays on the mat, playing with the fish attached to it. One has a rolling ball in the center of it and he loves to roll the ball round with his hands. The other has a music button which he is figuring out.
